Chinese Language History
Chinese or Mandarin Language (Hanyu/Zhongwen, 中文) is spoken over 1 billion people in People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Singapore, and all over the world. It has became United Nations formal language as well. As the most dominat language in Asia, Chinese has greatly influenced the writing systems and vocabularies of another languages such as Japanese and Koreanese. Unlike many other languages, speak in Chinese Language is complicated with more than 5 dialect groups. The simplified Chinese (Pinyin) was originated in 1948 after the establishment of People’s Republic of China, which purpose was to make this language more accessible by non-Chinese speaker. But, traditionally Chinese is still used among Chinese population around the world until now. The difficulties that may we face when we start to learn Chinese are learn its tones and characters.
Tones in Mandarin Language
Simplified Mandarin has four tones. This tones are used to distiguished characters from each other. For the beginner, it always difficult in mastering this. So, characters and tones can not be separated from each other when we start to learn this language. For example, ba(1) means eight while ba(4) means father.
Mandarin Language Characters
After you can master these tones well, you may start to learn its characters. There are roughly 70.000 Chinese characters and phonetic sounds. An average person has to know about 3.000 characters to be able to read the newspaper. In secondary schools the number of characters taught is 5.000 (I have to learn hard from this now on since I always forget in remembering characters I have learned 🙂 )
You will see the how beautiful this language is when you begin to start learn it. Although it has complex characters, when you know its basic writing you will enjoy it much, trust me !!.
